TGI Fridays brings back its nostalgic red stripe polo shirts – now made from recycled plastic

Staff at TGI Fridays – now known just as Fridays in the UK – are set to wear the brand's iconic red and white stripes when the restaurants reopen this spring.

The nostalgic uniforms will be made from recycled plastic as the chain celebrates "sustainability" for its 35th birthday.

Fridays says it is also committed to ensuring all its food waste is recycled and that it has "approved responsible sourcing policies" for ingredients such as palm oil, soy and fish.

The shirts are a nod to its original striped uniform when the chain made its UK debut on 18 March 1986 at the Hagley Road restaurant in Birmingham.

They will now be made from 100% recycled plastic, with six plastic water bottles used for each one.

Chief executive of Fridays, Robert Cook, said: "What better way to celebrate our 35th birthday than with a present to our Fridays fans and family - bringing back the iconic red and white stripe uniforms.

“The team is incredibly excited to don the stripes again for the first time in nearly 10 years and spread that Friday's feeling to our guests when we reopen on April 12th.

“We’ve also worked hard to ensure our new shirts are sustainable and environmentally friendly – making them entirely out of recycled materials.

"We can’t wait for Fridays fans to see the newly kitted out team in action and start our release from lockdown with a bang!”

The uniforms will initially be rolled out across 28 of its restaurants when they reopen for outdoor dining on 12 April.

Fridays aims to kit out all its staff in the red stripes by the end of 2021.
