Thousands of commuters are facing travel chaos after five London Underground lines were hit by delays in the lead up to rush hour.

The Bakerloo line and Central line were experiencing severe disruption across the entire service at 4pm on Wednesday and there were minor delays on the entire Metropolitan line and Northern line.

District Line commuters were also facing disruption between High Street Kensington and Edgware Road while TfL "establishes a new signalling system".

It came after a morning of travel chaos after the whole Northern line was suspended at about 6am.

A Transport for London spokeswoman said the Northern line should be back to good service by “peak time” but it was unsure when the other lines would return to normal.

A statement on the Bakerloo line’s Twitter account urged commuters to use an alternate route: “We're now up and running, but this is with severe delays across the entire line.

“The disruption is due to an earlier faulty train at Lambeth North.”

A tweet from the Central line also told commuters to find a different way home after a signal failure at Liverpool Street had caused delays across the entire line: “We're now running with severe delays across the entire line.

“This is due to a signal failure at Liverpool Street.

“If you can use an alternate route for your travel this afternoon it will be quicker.”

At around 3pm, the Metropolitan line Twitter account posted that there were minor delays across the whole line while a new signalling system was established.

At 4pm, the Northern line said there were minor delays across the entire line: “We're now running with minor delays across the entire line.

“The disruption is due to an earlier signalling system failure.”

Brian Woodhead, London Underground’s Director of Customer Service, said: “I am extremely sorry for the disruption suffered by customers on the Tube network today. Our staff are working hard to try and resolve these separate issues as quickly as possible.”
