This is the moment a fare dodger is confronted for using an invalid card to evade paying for almost £4,000 worth of journeys.
Footage shows Transport for London (TfL) investigator Lisa hunt down the suspect at Seven Kings station in north-east London, pouncing on him after hours of investigation.
He was wanted for 530 counts of fare evasion, amounting to £3,700 worth of unpaid fares. The fare dodger had been shirking the fares by using an invalid or declined card.
In the footage, the suspect admits to using his uncle’s contactless card to pay for journeys, explaining that his uncle has gone to Georgia and the card is “not working.”
Claiming to have only used the card for a day, Lisa urges the man “not to lie”, before unveiling CCTV evidence and TfL journey reports.
The man can be seen on CCTV entering and leaving London stations on the Elizabeth line, after having used the broken card for over a year.
Another officer tells the man to take “deep breaths” as the officers announce he will be facing a hefty £3,710.80 in unpaid fares and prosecution for the unpaid journeys.
The suspect is later heard apologising to officers. He pleaded guilty at court and was fined £40 plus £275 compensation and £275 costs.
The TfL bust was captured on Channel 5’s Fare Dodgers: At War with the Law, which will air on Monday night at 9pm.
The team at TfL has managed to flag the blocked cards using sophisticated analysis software and has combined this with extensive CCTV evidence and travel history reports.
Officers spend hours matching footage with dates and times to successfully locate suspects.
It comes as the capital finds itself amidst a “fare-dodging epidemic”, with an estimated 3.5 per cent of the 3.6 billion annual passenger journeys across the TfL network going unpaid.
The total cost of fare evasion is estimated to be £190 million in revenue for the operator every year.
TfL is now cracking down on fare-evaders and says the percentage of unpaid journeys is down to around 3.3 percent.
It has secured 14,406 convictions for fare evasion in 2025/2026 - an increase of 995 on the year before.
