'Texting Balogun to stay' - Arsenal fans noticed what Per Mertesacker did during Burnley defeat

Arsenal's first-half showing against Burnley was one that won't be fondly remembered by too many.

The Gunners, who went into the game having lost their last three home matches in the Premier League, failed to break down the Clarets inside the opening 45 minutes and ended up losing 1-0 following Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's second half own goal.

Alexandre Lacazette had Arsenal's best chance in the first-half when the ball dropped to him inside the area, but the Frenchman's effort was kept out by Nick Pope in the Burnley goal.

Such was the lackluster nature of the first-half that it could be summed up by one moment.

Arsenal 0 - 1 Burnley: Mikel Arteta post-match press conference

Before the half came to a close, the Sky Sports cameras panned to Per Mertesacker in the stands at the Emirates Stadium.

The former Arsenal captain retired from football at the end of the 2017/2018 season, but remains a key figure at the club.

He is the current coach of the Arsenal Academy and was in attendance on Sunday evening - perhaps to watch the progress of Bukayo Saka who was named in the starting XI.

However, the highlight of his first-half was seemingly something on his phone.

And some Arsenal fans had some hilarious theories as to what the German was actually doing.

Take a look at what's been said on Twitter...

@MrKeshaiv said: "Even Per Mertesacker was bored here, probably texting Balogun to stay."

@SweetAFCJane said: "Per Mertesacker not looking at the game at the moment. Me too Per, me too."

@afcpadraig said: "Per Mertesacker would rather play Candy Crush than watch this garbage.
