Textile trader stripped, paraded with placard in Surat

SURAT: Video of a man stripped and paraded holding a board with 'thief' written on it, went viral in the city on Thursday.

A saree was wrapped around his waist as onlookers took his photos and none came to his rescue.

The person taking the video calls the victim 'thief', while the victim walks silently with his eyes down without objection.

Police started inquiry in the incident and it is suspected that the businessman is from Tamil Nadu.

Police suspect that he was tortured to recover due payment.

The trader came to select and purchase textile products when those businessmen, who did not receive payment for past purchases, found him, police sources informed.

Police personnel are trying to identify the victim and after preliminary inquiry, an offence will be registered.

It is first of its kind incident that came to light in the textile hub of Surat when a trader is tortured in this manner to recover payment.
