Texas Tech (3-5) vs. West Virginia (3-5) Game Preview
Why Texas Tech Will Win
It’s November, and West Virginia’s offense still has yet to make an appearance this season.
The Mountaineers don’t have anything they can rely on. The running game isn’t working, the passing attack is the least-efficient in the conference, and the long drives are few and far between.
They were competitive last week in a 17-14 loss to Baylor, but teams that score just 14 points a game in the Big 12 – like WVU has done over the last three games – equals death.
The WVU pass defense hasn’t been a total disaster, but it’s getting killed lately on big plays. Jalen Hurts took target practice in Oklahoma’s win a few weeks ago, and for all of the problems scoring, Baylor’s offense got a 77% passing day out of Charlie Brewer averaging close to 11 yards per pop.
Texas Tech might be losing, but the passing game still works. It’s also not making big mistakes, with no interceptions in four of the last five games.

Why West Virginia Will Win
There is a passing game in there with West Virginia, but it’s having an impossible time busting out.
Austin Kendall had a 367-yard passing day against Texas. He’s had a few moments when the offense started to click, but he’s had issues with the better defenses – Oklahoma and Baylor – lately.
Texas Tech’s pass defense isn’t slowing down anyone to a stop.
Brewer, Iowa State’s Brock Purdy, and Kansas’ Carter Stanley have gone off over the last three games, combining to connect on close to 70% of their passes for well over 1,100 yards and six touchdowns. There have been picks – Brewer got hit three times – but quarterbacks are averaging close to ten yards per throw lately against this defense.
Texas Tech doesn’t have the pass rush to make Kendall worry.

What’s Going To Happen
0-4 on the road so far this season, Texas Tech is about to have another rough day away from Lubbock.
West Virginia isn’t good at this offense thing, the team is struggling to find its identity early on under Neal Brown, and there’s been next to nothing to get excited about. This won’t be anything special but a win will get the Mountaineers to 4-5 to at least keep the season alive.
The WVU defense will come through then it absolutely has to. Texas Tech’s won’t.
