Texas Tech University police officer fatally shot, suspect in custody

DALLAS _ A Texas Tech University police officer was shot and killed Monday night at the Police Department's headquarters, prompting a lockdown at the Lubbock school that lasted for more than an hour as officials searched for the gunman.

Texas Tech police made a welfare check at a student's room earlier in the night and found evidence of drugs and drug paraphernalia, university spokesman Chris Cook said.

When they brought the student, Hollis A. Daniels, a 19-year-old freshman, to the campus police station for a debriefing, he reportedly pulled out a gun and fatally shot an officer in the head, Cook said.

He fled on foot but was captured when a campus police officer tackled him and took him into custody, Lubbock police said.

The campus was placed on lockdown as police searched for Daniels.

The lockdown was lifted about 9:30 p.m. after he was taken into custody.
