Texas State student who died after fraternity event drank nearly 5 times legal limit of alcohol

DALLAS _ The Travis County medical examiner determined that Texas State University student Matthew Ellis, 20, of Humble had a blood alcohol content of 0.38 _ nearly five times the limit for drivers of drinking age _ KVUE-TV reported. He did not have any drugs in his system, and his death was ruled accidental.

Ellis, a sophomore, was found unresponsive at his off-campus apartment the morning of Nov. 13, the day after his initiation into the school's chapter of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. He was pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later.

University president Denis M. Trauth said she was "deeply saddened" by Ellis' death and suspended all fraternity and sorority activities at the school.

San Marcos police Chief Chase Stapp said at the time that it was likely the case would result in criminal charges.

Wes Mau, the Hays County district attorney, told KVUE that his office would be reviewing the case in the near future.

Four fraternity chapters at Texas State were suspended last year for alcohol-policy violations after a Fort Worth-area student was dragged by a shuttle bus and killed at a 2016 party.
