MLS Soccer club FC Dallas recently sent out a press release detailing the Texas Sports Hall of Fame’s intent to honor Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt with his namesake award. Hunt will be the recipient of the 2018 Lamar Hunt Lifetime Achievement Award.
The Lamar Hunt Lifetime Achievement Award was established in 2006, and seeks to honor an individual who has helped Texas sports history to new heights. Lamar brought AFL football to the state of Texas with the Dallas Texans and he brought professional soccer to the state of Texas with the Dallas Tornado NASL team and MLS franchise FC Dallas. He had a history as a proponent of collegiate sports in Texas, specifically at his alma mater Southern Methodist University. Hunt was also one of the prominent figures behind opening The Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
As Lamar is no longer with us, Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt will receive accept the award on behalf of his father and the Hunt family. Here’s what Hunt had to say in the press release:
“My dad dedicated his professional life to sports, and he helped establish the Texas Sports Hall of Fame to celebrate the outstanding contributions of his fellow Texans to the games he loved. My family and I sincerely appreciate the commitment of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame to preserving the legacy and history of sports in the great state of Texas, and we are humbled to have my father Lamar associated with the hall’s highest honor.”
A gala for the award ceremony will be held on Thursday, May 9th in Frisco, Texas at Toyota Stadium.
