Texas shooting: Two suspects dead after five police injured as they are shot at during Houston drugs raid

Two suspects are dead after five police officers were injured as they were shot at during a drugs raid in Houston, Texas.

The officers faced gunfire as they forced open the front door of a home to they carried out a search warrant on Monday.

A group of about a dozen narcotics police stormed the house before being shot at in the shocking scenes.

It was not immediately known how many officers returned fire but the two suspects were later found dead.

SWAT officers used two robots to go into the home and determine that it was safe to enter after the gunfire stopped.

Of the five officers injured, two were shot in the neck and were rushed to hospital. They were in a critical but stable condition.

Police Chief Art Acevedo said officers had been responding to a tip off that black tar heroin was being sold from the house.

"Once the officers breached the door and the gunfire began from the suspects, one of the suspects actually retreated momentarily to the back of the room and then that suspect came back and again engaged the officers in gunfire," Acevedo said.

All the officers were taken to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center in Houston, with two of them transported by helicopter.

Police did not immediately have additional information about the suspects.
