The popular mayor of a small town in Texas has stepped down and moved to Mexico to be with his male lover, who had been living in San Angelo, Texas illegally.
The website of the San Angelo Standard-Times reported that JW Lown said on a telephone call from Mexico, where he is staying in a hotel, that he could not continue to hold the office if he was "aiding and abetting" an illegal alien -- his boyfriend since March.
"I made the final decision when I knew it was the right decision to make for me and my partner and our future — and for the community," he said.
Lown was scheduled to take the oath of office Tuesday for his fourth term as mayor but didn't show up. He had just been reelected with 89% of the vote.
He said he'll return if "the people of San Angelo will welcome me back."
