The worst-kept NFL draft secret with the Pittsburgh Steelers is they want to upgrade the inside linebacker position. Despite signing Mark Barron in the offseason, the Steelers continue to scout inside linebacker prospects. One of those prospects the Steelers seem very interested in is former Texas inside linebacker Gary Johnson.
General manager Kevin Colbert made his way to the Texas pro day last month with Johnson as the only viable draft prospect for Pittsburgh in attendance. Now there is a rumor Johnson is headed to Pittsburgh for a pre-draft visit with the Steelers.
Johnson was at Texas for two seasons after starting his college career at Dodge City Community College. He really only has 2018 film as a full-time starter and this was his one season where he really made an impact.
In terms of his game, Johnson plays with explosion and this will draw your attention. He’s often able to penetrate and get into the backfield where his speed allows him to chase down ballcarriers. But in terms of coverage, his speed can’t make up for a lack of fluidity in his hips and struggles with play recognition.
Where does Johnson project? Somewhere in the fourth round would be fair for a guy who needs to learn to play smarter and develop NFL strength to shed blocks. But if the interest the Steelers have is this strong, don’t be shocked if they pick him with one of their third-round picks.
