The PGA Tour plans to restart its season at Colonial in early June. Could Fort Worth be the site of NASCAR's return to action too?
Gov. Greg Abbott said he met with NASCAR officials on Monday, and the hope is to return to TMS "very soon."
"I hope to announce the exciting details in the near future," Abbott wrote on Twitter. "To prevent spread of #COVID19 it will be without fans. But they will put on a great show for TV."
TMS and NASCAR have yet to respond to a request for comment. A date for a potential race is unknown, and it's unclear if TMS would be the first track to host a race.
Marcus Smith, the president of Speedway Motorsports, which owns TMS and a number of other tracks, posted a tweet thanking Abbott.
"Thank you for your support governor Abbot!" Smith wrote. "With the right protocols in place, @NASCAR would be the perfect sport to be the first to return to competition."
TMS had its opening race weekend last month postponed amid the coronavirus pandemic. Makeup dates for that race weekend have not been announced.
The track is scheduled to host its summer race weekend June 5-6 with a NASCAR truck race on June 5, and an IndyCar race on June 6.
TMS president Eddie Gossage had previously said the track would not host an event if fans can't attend since the track doesn't receive any TV money from IndyCar.
With NASCAR, however, tracks receive a percentage of the TV revenue, so holding that race would still make financial sense even if fans can't attend.
NASCAR last raced on March 8. The series has postponed all races up until its all-star race weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway scheduled for May 16.
