A popular Texas DJ died Wednesday at age 23 after falling four stories from a balcony earlier in the month, police said.
DJ D Baby, whose real name was Darian Lewis, was hospitalized in Houston on July 4 after falling from a 13th-floor apartment to a pool deck on the ninth floor, the Houston Chronicle reported, citing officials.
Houston Police say Lewis’ death appears to be the result of an “unfortunate accident” but are investigating the incident before releasing an official cause. The incident occurred at the Camden Downtown Apartments complex at about 5:30 a.m. local time.
A woman named Nishia Jackson, whom People identified as Lewis’ girlfriend, addressed the fall in a Facebook post Wednesday.
“On the night in question, her associate dropped her off to me (because) they said she could not drive. She wanted to drive to her place & due to her intoxication I stood in front of the door,” Jackson wrote.
“She ran to the patio (never in a million years would I have a reason to think that the next actions would follow)… once she she climbed on the patio chair I sprinted from the door to her but she fell over before I could save her. I literally saw & heard her fall before my eyes.”
Jackson continued, “There’s no way I could have pushed her over, she was only able to get over because she climbed on to the furniture.”
Lewis frequently posted photos of her performances on an Instagram account that has more than 30,000 followers.
In a Facebook post last Wednesday, Lewis’ mother wrote her “heart is heavy and broken.”
“My youngest and only daughter has transitioned, please pray for the family,” Terri Lewis wrote.
