AUSTIN, Texas _ Never mind Saturday's game with Kansas.
Charlie Strong's job status at Texas took center stage Monday at the football coach's weekly press conference.
Ten games into Strong's third season, Texas sits at 5-5 with the Jayhawks and TCU remaining on the schedule.
Strong indicated he's as aware as anyone about his record and status with rumors swirling about his job status since early in the season.
"I look at how we're playing. I don't ever make excuses. There are no excuses," Strong said, adding that "the losses are mounting."
Realistically, Strong would probably have to win out to be relatively secure of a fourth season, although nothing is guaranteed.
All indications so far have been that UT President Greg Fenves and athletic director Mike Perrin want to keep Strong if they can justify progress. But Texas has a five-loss season for the third consecutive year under Strong.
"We had chances to play better early and we did," Strong said. "We're 5-5 and there's probably two or three that we let get away from us."
Indeed Texas has lost three games (Kansas State, West Virginia and Oklahoma) by 12 points. But it's also won three games (Baylor, Notre Dame and Texas Tech) by 12 points.
Strong could conceivably go into the TCU game the day after Thanksgiving coaching for his job much like Mack Brown did.
Asked a question about the divisive presidential election, Strong declined comment, which is probably a wise move.
He has a referendum of his own coming up soon.
