Texas attorney general appeals mail-in ballot drop-off ruling

AUSTIN, Texas _ Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed an appeal Saturday against a ruling late Friday that halted enforcement of a state order allowing only one drop-off location for mail-in ballots.

Paxton filed an emergency motion for a stay of earlier Friday's ruling in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit.

County election offices had been prohibited from having more than one in-person drop-off location for mail-in ballots since Gov. Greg Abbott issued an executive order on Oct. 1.

"The district court's order undermines our election security, disrupts the democratic process, and will only lead to voter confusion. It cannot stand," Paxton said in a news release. "Mail-in ballots are particularly vulnerable to fraud. Protections that ensure their security must be upheld and my office will continue to fight for safe, free and fair elections."
