Texas A&M (0-0) vs. Texas State (0-0) Game Preview

It’s the third ever matchup between the two, with Texas A&M coming up with a 28-0 win in 1919, and with the Bobcats bringing a little bit of a fight in a 2005 44-31 loss. This time around, it’s all about the Aggies trying to tune up for what’s coming.

After kicking off the Jake Spavital era with the paycheck game against the Aggies, the Bobcats get Wyoming at home – they don’t leave Texas until late October.

For A&M, it’s scrimmage time to get everything ready for the date at Clemson to follow, and with the SEC opener against Auburn coming up in a few weeks.

Why Texas State Will Win

The Bobcats have to hope the Aggies are already thinking about the trip to Clemson.

Beyond just the coaching change – Spavital knows how to get an offense rolling – there should be more of a passing game, the line gets everyone back, and the receiving corps should be a plus as the season goes on. It’s the other side of the ball, though, that might be able to make this more than just a light scrimmage.

The secondary has the upside to be among the best in the Sun Belt, and there’s just enough size up front to hold up a bit against an A&M O line that has to be a whole lot stronger.

Why Texas A&M Will Win

Get ready for the young guys to rise up and rock.

The A&M defensive line might lose plenty of key parts, but the talent coming in is special. The secondary has the talent and upside to be special, and overall, the defense should be able to handle a TXST attack that will be okay, but will need a while to get rocking and rolling.

The other side of the ball should be able to take care of things early on.

As long as the offensive line can give QB Kellen Mond time, he should be able to take target practice against a good Bobcat secondary that won’t be able to handle all the Aggie talent at receiver. This is going to be a special group of wideouts that will produce against everyone.

The game might not get out of hand considering all the experience on the Texas State defense, but A&M has way, way too much talent. For an opening game of the season, and considering there will be plenty of sputters and coughs, the Aggies will make up for a slew of mistakes with talent.

What’s Going To Happen

The Texas State offense won’t be there yet. It’ll press a bit with the passing game, and the defense will be just good enough to keep this from getting out of hand, but A&M’s offense will need a half to kick it into gear.

The Bobcats won’t do anything to throw a scare into the A&M faithful, but it’ll be a bit of a rocky win for the home side. Again, though, it’s going to be a good enough game to get everything in place for Clemson.
