Texas A&M is expanding the sale of alcoholic beverages in Kyle Field to the general public, becoming the first school in the SEC to take advantage of the league lifting its ban on alcohol sales at athletic events.
The school will offer a variety of domestic and imported beers as well as a selection of wine for the general public to purchase until the end of the third quarter.
SEC schools had been prohibited from selling alcohol in public areas at athletic venues, but recently the conference lifted that restriction. Schools could previously sell alcoholic beverages in suites, clubs or privately leased areas.
"This is another way we are enhancing the amenities at Kyle Field," interim athletics director R.C. Slocum said in a statement Thursday. "We are extending the availability of alcohol beyond the premium areas which have had this option for many years. Fans, 21 and older, will have the option to purchase alcohol, regardless of seating area."
SEC schools aren't required or expected to sell alcohol at athletics events, but the rule change allows schools to decide whether to sell alcohol. A school that permits alcohol sales must establish policies governing the sale and distribution.
Texas A&M stated its sales plan will comply with SEC expectations as well as university policy along with state and local regulations.
There are more than 50 schools at the Football Bowl Subdivision level that sell alcoholic beverages at athletic events.
Georgia announced earlier this week that it would not sell alcohol to the general public during sporting events this season. Alabama, Auburn and Arkansas previously said they would not sell alcohol, either.
The University of Florida has not yet announced its alcohol sales plan.
