Texans young tight ends provide balance to passing offense

The Houston Texans have two young tight ends in Jordan Thomas and Jordan Akins that came to them through the 2018 NFL draft, and general manager Brian Gaine likes what they can provide to the offense.

The second-year general manager elaborated on what pleases him with the Jordan twins on SiriusXM NFL Radio via Patrick D. Starr.

“We feel like now there is some horizontal balance in the offense, we can test the defense vertical, we can test them underneath, we can test them intermediate, we can test them on the perimeter,” said Gaine. “So, once we get everybody back and healthy we are excited about our passing game next year.”

In 2018, Thomas and Akins had to grow up quickly after the retirement of C.J. Fiedorowicz. Veteran Ryan Griffin was the position’s anchor, but it needed the youngsters to step up. Thomas did as a red zone threat with four touchdown catches.

With the recent addition of veteran tight end Darren Fells who brings with him a strong blocking ability, it is hard to see all four tight ends (Griffin included) remaining on the roster come September, meaning changes are to be expected.
