The Houston Texans must rely on rookie quarterback Davis Mills to take command under center as former Pro Bowl quarterback Tyrod Taylor continues to recover from a strained hamstring sustained in Week 2.
Although the Texans are on a five-game winning streak with four of them attributed to Mills’ record, receiver Chris Moore sees aspects of the third-round rookie’s playing style that could be beneficial to the team and his career going forward.
“He’s an even-keeled dude,” Moore said. “He doesn’t have any super highs or super lows. He tries to stay pretty level, so I do like that about him. You need that in a quarterback and a leader, somebody that doesn’t get too high or too low.”
Moore has a frame of reference when it comes to quarterbacks. The former is a 2016 fourth-round pick for the Baltimore Ravens. Moore had the opportunity to play with Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco and NFL MVP Lamar Jackson before signing with Houston in the offseason to continue following coach David Culley, who was his receivers coach in Baltimore from 2019-20.
When the new week begins, Mills turns the page, regardless of the good or bad that happened in the game prior.
Said Moore: “I feel like each week, he’s just going to attack the week and start over fresh. That’s what you’ve got to hope for coming into next week, that he’s not going to dwell on the past and that it’s going to be a new week for him.”
The Texans weren’t able to achieve a favorable outcome as the Indianapolis Colts pulverized Houston 31-3 at Lucas Oil Stadium. In a Week 7 encounter with the Arizona Cardinals that features a showdown with the last undefeated team in the NFL that also rosters two former faces of the Texans’ franchise in J.J. Watt and DeAndre Hopkins, Mills will need to keep that same even-keeled approach.
