Texans Wire exclusive: Texas A&M’s Jimbo Fisher says Cullen Gillaspia is a ‘great story’

Texas A&M Aggies head football coach Jimbo Fisher believes that the Houston Texans managed to get themselves a “unique guy” with fullback Cullen Gillaspia

Fisher spoke to The Texans Wire about the former 12th Man from A&M, and how the Texans’ seventh-round pick from the 2019 NFL draft is a story of determination and dedication.

“Cullen is a great story,” Fisher said. “You go from being a walk-on, working on the scout team. You show some athletic ability in special teams and earn the #12 jersey at Texas A&M, which is a big deal. He embraced that responsibility and understood he was playing for the entire student body, the 12th Man.”

Despite this extra weight on his shoulders, Gillaspia appears to have been the definition of a workhorse.

“He played a little linebacker before we got here (Texas A&M) but we needed a fullback,” said Fisher. “He took coaching very well. I know he will give the Texans everything he has.

“He’s a unique guy in his position. He’s extremely athletic, and what he brings to special teams in the NFL, which we emphasize, too … it’s one of the great rewards you get in coaching. It really is.”

Gilllaspia appears to be a great example of a player from whom relatively little was expected, but defied the odds and put in the work once he realized how close he was to accomplishing his dream.

“It’s great to see a guy who never really thought about playing in the NFL, but once he realized he could, it’s a credit to him and his coaches,” admitted Fisher. “They developed him, and he allowed them to do that.”

A versatile and dedicated player, this Katy, Texas native will no doubt be playing to his absolute limit every snap he gets.
