Texans waive defensive end Johnny Dwight

The Houston Texans have until Aug. 31 to trim down to 53 men on their active roster, but the club got an early start Friday.

The Texans announced they have waived undrafted rookie defensive end Johnny Dwight. The 6-3, 301-pound edge defender from Alabama recorded four combined tackles in the club’s 28-26 loss at the Green Bay Packers in the first preseason game. However, Dwight did not play for Houston in the second preseason game versus the Detroit Lions at NRG Stadium.

Houston still has has nine defensive ends on the roster with Jadeveon Clowney also listed as a linebacker and D.J. Reader also listed as a nose tackle.

The emergence of Albert Huggins could have played a part in the club deciding to waive Dwight. The former Clemson Tiger has registered two combined tackles and two quarterback hurries for the Texans in the club’s two preseason games. In the Texans’ 30-23 win over the Lions, Huggins saw 31 snaps on defense.
