Texans to look at ‘big picture’ for the offense in 2022 offseason

The Houston Texans offense had multiple identity crises until finally settling down when rookie Davis Mills returned under center in Week 14.

Since the third-rounder from Stanford took over for Tyrod Taylor, the Texans are a ball-control offense that finds completions to slowly but surely move the sticks.

According to coach David Culley, the Texans aren’t going to change much in the offense in terms of scheme, but will look to add other complements to help the offensive production.

“We just want to get other players in here that we feel like would fit what we want to do,” Culley told reporters Jan. 7. “Obviously, there’s going to be some changes. We’re just going to have to wait to kind of see what kind of changes we’re going to make with the guys that are leaving and see what we have to do to replace those guys. But yes, we want to be better. We want to get better.”

Culley emphasized that he still wants to accomplish with Houston what he said they would do, which chiefly has been fixing penalties and finding consistency on offense.

Said Culley: “Obviously, we’re going to look at the big picture with that and bring in the guys that we feel like fit what we want to do. We still want to do the same things that I came here and said we were going to do. We’ve just got to do a better job of coaching it and we’re going to add some more pieces to it to make it better.”

The Texans’ coaching staff ostensibly won’t see much change in the offseason as Culley said he expects offensive coordinator Tim Kelly to be back “100%.”
