Texans TE Jordan Akins is putting in the work to improve blocking

When the Houston Texans drafted tight end Jordan Akins out of UCF in the third round of the 2017 draft, they likely saw a developmental project. A former wide receiver and MLB hopeful, the then-26-year-old Akins oozed athleticism and receiving potential, but lacked in the blocking realm.

Akins has done what the Texans desperately needed him to do: improve as a blocker. How? Adding size to his 6-4, 243-pound frame and taking advice from coaches.

“He’s done a really good job over the past year really putting in the work in the weight room and trying to get stronger and really learn the technique of blocking,” said offensive coordinator Tim Kelly on Thursday. “That’s something that they really didn’t ask him to do at UCF. Tomorrow, he needs to come in, have a good day and continue to work. But he’s done a good job.”

Akins is still primarily a receiving threat at tight — notching 10 receptions for 157 yards and two scores on the year. However, he is now more than that.

Opposite of last year, the Texans will run towards Akins’ side, use him as a pull-blocker or use play-action with him on the field. The improvement as a blocker helps the offense because he is no longer a tell for a pass.
