The Houston Texans announced Monday the signing of undrafted free agent receiver Floyd Allen.
As a matter of housekeeping, the club also announced the official release of tight end Ryan Griffin.
Allen, an Ole Miss product, is a Houston native. Standing at 5-10 and weighing 199 pounds, the former Rebel played in nine games and caught a total of four receptions for 44 yards. Given his lack of playing time, it seems likely that he will be fighting for a practice squad spot.
The writing had been on the wall for Griffin for some time. The 29-year-old saw a slight drop off in production last season recording zero touchdowns, with injuries yet again an issue. Add into the mix the fact that Jordan Thomas and Jordan Akins were drafted at his position, both of whom have shown great promise in the passing game, and Thomas also as a blocker and Griffin was going to have to do something special to retain his spot.
This offseason the Texans also added veteran former Cleveland Brown tight end Darren Fells who specializes in blocking, while in the third round of the draft they brought in San Diego State man mountain Kahale Warring who looks like an extremely athletic pass-catching tight end.
To finish it off, with Griffin being arrested in Nashville for punching and breaking a window on the night Warring was drafted, and his time in Houston was over.
In six seasons with the Texans, Griffin caught 136 passes for 1,491 yards and seven touchdowns.
