Texans sign quarterback A.J. McCarron to backup Deshaun Watson

The Houston Texans have a new backup quarterback in AJ McCarron.

The former Cincinnati Bengal and Oakland Raider signed a deal with the AFC South club on Tuesday worth one year for $3 million.

Cincinnati drafted McCarron in the fifth-round of the 2014 NFL draft. In his four seasons with Cincinnati and last year in Oakland, McCarron produced 928 passing yards, six touchdowns, two interceptions, and compiled a 2-1 record as a starter.

The move helps the Texans get younger at backup quarterback. In 2018, the club had 35-year-old Brandon Weeden backing up Watson. Now, the club gets a 28-year-old who can help Watson out in the classroom while also helping out the team if anything happens to the franchise signal caller.
