Texans sign QB Jordan Ta’amu to replace injured A.J. McCarron

With the news that Houston Texans backup quarterback A.J. McCarron could miss the whole preseason with a thumb injury, the team has decided to sign a replacement QB.

In order to spare starter Deshaun Watson the unnecessary reps, QB3, and special teams ace Joe Webb likely to start on Thursday against the Green Bay Packers. Therefore, to backup Webb, the Texans have signed undrafted rookie QB Jordan Ta’amu.

The former Ole Miss signal-caller attended Houston’s rookie minicamp, but was not signed by the team. However, he has been given a second chance by coach Bill O’Brien after McCarron’s injury.

Ta’amu played 12 games in 2018 for the Rebels, passing for 3,918 yards, 19 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He also rushed for 342 yards and six touchdowns.

He will likely be fighting for a practice squad spot this year or a spot on another team come cut down day. In order to make space on the roster, the Texans cut rookie center D.J. Coker, formerly of Rhodes College.
