Texans sign former Giants safety Michael Thomas

The Houston Texans have added depth to their defensive back end on the second day of the 2020 NFL Draft, and they didn’t even need to make a selection.

The AFC South champions signed former New York Giants safety Michael Thomas on Friday.

Adding Thomas also gives the Texans another quality special teams player, as well as stocks the cupboard at safety for Houston with starters Justin Reid and Tashaun Gipson with reserves A.J. Moore, Jaylen Watkins, and Eric Murray backing them up.

The Houston Nimitz High School product went undrafted out of Stanford in 2012, catching on with the San Francisco 49ers. Thomas stayed with the 49ers through their 2013 preseason until he was released prior to the finalization of the 53-man roster.

The Miami Dolphins added Thomas in 2013, and he stayed with the AFC East club through the 2017 season.

In 2018, Thomas signed with the Giants, and earned a Pro Bowl with the NFC East team in his first season.

Thomas adds to collection of excellent special teamers Brad Seely has on his unit in linebacker Dylan Cole, cornerback Keion Crossen, and cornerback Lonnie Johnson.
