Texans sign cornerback Phillip Gaines after workout

The Houston Texans signed cornerback Phillip Gaines to the 53-man roster on Tuesday evening after a successful workout.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the club is giving the former Rice Owl a one-year contract.

The former Kansas City Chiefs third-round pick from 2014 played with the Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns in 2018. Over the Judson High School alumnus’ career, he has collected 138 combined tackles 16 pas breakups, two forced fumbles, and an interception in 52 career games, 22 of which he started.

According to ESPN 97.5 host Jayson Braddock, Gaines is a slot corner, which is exactly the role Colvin used to play for the Texans.

By signing Gaines on Tuesday, the Texans are not on the hook for any guaranteed money on his contract.
