Texans safety Tashaun Gipson leaves no doubt about his physicality

The Houston Texans signed former Cleveland Brown and Jacksonville Jaguar safety Tashaun Gipson in March after Tyrann Mathieu went to the Kansas City Chiefs.

In Gipson’s first training camp with his third team, the Pro Bowler has made his physicality known through three days of camp.

“You can tell he’s a physical player,” coach Bill O’Brien told reporters Saturday at Methodist Training Center. “We played against him we know what we’re getting there. You watch him on tape, he covered a lot of good tight ends consistently well. We feel good about where he’s at. He’s a solid guy who works very hard out on the practice field. It’s good to have him here.”

Gipson will play alongside second-year safety Justin Reid, who has a football intelligence uncommon for such a young player, particularly at defensive back. With Reid bringing a tactical approach and Gipson a physical presence, the Texans could have one formidable back end when the season kicks off Sept. 9 at the New Orleans Saints.

“He’s been good since the day he’s walked in here,” O’Brien said. “He’s got good size, he’s a good pro, he’s played in a lot of systems.”

Gipson earned his Pro Bowl in 2014 with the Browns. The undrafted Wyoming Cowboy picked off six passes, returning one for a touchdown, in 11 games for Cleveland, all of which he started.
