Texans S Justin Reid says QB Davis Mills is ‘at the top of the rookie class’

Houston Texans safety Justin Reid not only gets sideline passes to Davis Mills running the offense, but he also gets to work with him every day in practice.

According to the Texans’ fourth-year safety from Stanford, Mills is progressing as a rookie after 11 games, nine of which he has started.

“The growth that Davis has had from the beginning of the season to where we are now has been tremendous,” Reid told reporters on Dec. 31. “It’s what was expected. He’s a very smart guy, capable of making all the throws. He’s taken advantage of the opportunity to grow with all of this with the starts he’s had, and he’s just consistently gotten better.”

Mills has tallied 2,200 passing yards, 12 touchdowns, and an 86.2 passer rating, which leads Reid to believe that the fellow Stanford product is at the top of his class.

“He’s at the top of the rookie class right now over the second half of the season as far as quarterbacks go in the rookie class, so he’s been doing a great job,” Reid said. “I can see the game has slowed down for him from where we started at the beginning of the year.”

Mills will get a chance to show what he has at one of the key points of his origin story as the Texans take on the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., just 17 miles from where he played college ball.
