Texans rookie OT Tytus Howard to return to practice soon

First-round rookie offensive tackle Tytus Howard was held out of Houston Texans training camp open practice Thursday at Houston Methodist Training Center.

According to coach Bill O’Brien, the former Alabama State Hornet was held out of practice as he recovered from a minor unspecified injury.

“Just a little bit of a day off,” O’Brien told reporters. “A little banged up, nothing serious. He’ll be back out on Saturday.”

The Texans have been breaking in Howard as an offensive guard, playing along the interior of the offensive line. The rationale is that it is easier for a rookie to learn the speed of the game inside with two veterans flanking him than to put him out on an island against formidable edge defenders.

Saturday will be another open practice for the Texans, and an opportunity for Howard to practice in the scorching Texas heat. The last practice Howard made was Wednesday inside the practice bubble.
