Texans rookie OT Tytus Howard returns in time for joint practices with Packers

First-round rookie offensive tackle Tytus Howard returned Monday for the Houston Texans’ joint practices with the Green Bay Packers.

The former Alabama State Hornet had missed the past few practices, but has now made it back to training camp practice, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

As has been for most of training camp, Howard has lined up at left guard for the Texans as veteran Matt Kalil has been manning left tackle. However, on the unofficial depth chart released by the team’s public relations department, Howard is listed as the fourth left tackle behind Kalil, Julién Davenport, and Roderick Johnson.

Having Howard play at guard is a way for the club to get the rookie used to the speed of the NFL. If Howard is able to provide any quality reps for Houston, whether at guard or tackle, in his rookie season, it goes a long way to repairing an offensive line that was part of the 62 sacks sustained by Deshaun Watson in 2018.
