The Houston Texans re-signed two backup defensive players on the eve of the unofficial start of free agency.
Defensive tackle Khalil Davis and cornerback/special teamer Kris Boyd signed new deals with the team, according to KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson. While terms of the deal were not indicated, Wilson reported that both Davis and Boyd re-signed on a one-year contract.
Davi, 27, played in 15 games and started one during his first season with Houston. He previously spent time with the Indianapolis Colts, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Los Angeles Rams, Pittsburgh Steelers and the USFL’s Birmingham Stallions.
The backup defensive tackle totaled two sacks, six quarterback hits and 10 pressures in 422 defensive snaps this season. He figures to play a key role as a reserve player for however the Texans organize their defensive line in 2024.
Boyd, 27, signed with the Texans practice squad on Oct. 27 but didn’t see a snap in the regular season until Week 16. He played 36 special teams snaps in Weeks 16 and 17 and only three defensive snaps in Week 17. Boyd did not record a tackle. Before he joined the Texans, Boyd tallied 95 combined tackles in four years with the Minnesota Vikings from 2019 to 2022.
Davis and Boyd are the most recent internal free agent Houston general manager Nick Caserio re-signed before they hit the open market. Dalton Schultz, Ka’imi Fairbairn, Desmond King and Eric Murray also remained with the team with new deals.
