Texans release DE J.J. Watt, will the Raiders be interested?

The Houston Texans are the most unpredictable team in the NFL right now. Their quarterback has asked for a trade. The president of the team resigned on Thursday and now, the greatest player in the franchise’s history was released on Friday.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Texans have released three-time defensive player of the year J.J. Watt. According to the man himself, Watt asked for his release as he is now a free agent and can sign anywhere he chooses.

Watt will turn 32 in March, but he is still an incredibly productive player. His combination of size, speed and athleticism make him an ideal fit as a three-technique in a 4-3 defense, but he has the position flex to play anywhere on the defensive line.

With the Raiders wanting to find an “alpha” on defense, does it make sense for the team to target Watt? They do have a massive hole at defensive tackle and he could solve it in the short term. However, the Raiders are up against the cap and likely don’t have the space to give Watt a long-term deal.

If the Raiders can find a way to make it work from a cap perspective, it would certainly be intriguing. But the Raiders need a long-term solution on the defensive line, not a short-term fix. Despite all of the career achievements expect the Raiders to pass on Watt.
