Texans receiver Vyncint Smith continues to impress

Former Limestone College wide receiver Vyncint Smith was a somewhat surprising inclusion on the Houston Texans roster when the 2018 season began.

The undrafted rookie became the first player from the South Carolina Division II college to make an NFL roster. He went on to make seven regular-season appearances, catching five of 10 targets for 91 yards and one touchdown.

Entering Year 2, the Texans remain a team in need of a reliable backup wide receiver. With a year of experience now under his belt, Smith seems to be impressing Bill O’Brien during his second offseason.

Yeah, he’s definitely improved,” said O’Brien. “He’s a guy that takes his job very seriously. He’s improved a lot, and that position is very competitive.”

And it isn’t just O’Brien who has been impressed by Smith. Members of the media singled him out as a player who has looked strong so far.

With how unpredictable the availability of Keke Coutee and Will Fuller is, having Smith develop into a reliable receiver would be a boon for the Texans’ passing game. The more that Smith is able to take advantage of vacancies in practice due to DeAndre Hopkins missing time and Fuller recovering from his ACL tear, the better.
