Texans QB Deshaun Watson is grasping the entire picture in 2019

Deshaun Watson changed the Houston Texans organization when they drafted him with the No. 12 pick in 2017. His leadership won a locker room as a rookie, then he built on that after his injury-shortened first year.

In 2019, Watson continues to show growth as a leader for Houston. Rather than being the starting quarterback alone, he’s the unquestioned leader of the offense; that shows in his captain patch.

“He’s done a good job really growing as a leader,” said offensive coordinator Tim Kelly on Thursday. “He’s the unquestioned leader of the offense.”

Whereas Watson can lead an offensive with moxie alone, he’s also doing so by checking hit teammates, and making sure he’s aware of what’s going on in the huddle.

“He does a good job commanding the huddle and really just making sure everybody’s out there, knowing who they are and knowing what exactly everybody is supposed to be doing,” said Kelly. “He’s done a really good job grasping the entire picture this year.”

Watson’s improved leadership shows in Houston’s 2-1 record. Each of Houston’s first three games has come down to the entire, two because Watson performed a comeback.
