Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson has better odds to win the NFL’s Most Valuable Player honor than Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees.
According to BetMGM, the two-time Pro Bowler has the fourth-best odds to win MVP at 12 to 1. Only Patrick Mahomes at 4 to 1, Russell Wilson at 5 to 1, and Lamar Jackson at 6 to 1 have better odds.
Rodgers, who won league MVP in 2011 and 2014, is tied with Brees, who has never won the honor, with 16 to 1 odds.
Dak Prescott is tied with Carson Wentz for 20 to 1 odds, and Matt Ryan has 25 to 1 odds.
Win total is the only stat that matters in an MVP race. Why Watson can’t crack into the top-3 is because the Texans have always been a wild-card weekend type of team. In order for Watson to get MVP consideration, the Texans will have to win convincingly and get a first-round bye.
In the case of Jackson, the Baltimore Ravens’ season that locked up home-field advantage through the AFC playoffs is what helped his MVP cause.
Along with wins, a quarterback in an MVP race has to demonstrate outstanding statistics, which is what Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes achieved in 2018.
If Watson has an MVP season, Houston fans will be extremely let down if their playoff run ends in the divisional round as Jackson’s did this postseason in Baltimore. The whole offseason is in front of the Texans for coach Bill O’Brien, now with full general managing duties, to assemble a competitive ball club that can get out of the divisional round of the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.
