Texans QB Davis Mills says ‘still a ton of room for improvement’

Davis Mills wasn’t bad, but he could have done better.

The third-round quarterback from Stanford completed 10 passes on 16 attempts for 115 yards for an 84.1 passer rating in the Houston Texans’ 20-14 win over the Dallas Cowboys Saturday night at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Mills also took a sack during his play that lasted from the start of the second quarter through the 11:00 mark of the fourth quarter.

Mills believes he has demonstrated his ability through two preseason games, but says he has to find a way to get better.

“Obviously there’s still a ton of room for improvement,” Mills said. “I mean, tonight, I felt we had a really good team effort. Obviously, the defense had four takeaways — that’s huge. Getting us back the ball on offense. And the players around me were making plays, so it made my job a little easier.”

Mills identified the areas where he needs to improve, and they related to assets that can only be gained through continual reps and consistent work.

Said Mills: “I’ve only been here for training camp so far and what we did in the spring. There’s still time for me to learn the system and learn the players around me. I feel I can still build a lot of chemistry with continual reps. But, I mean, so far, everyone’s grown together, and I think we have done well as a team moving forward.”

The third preseason game should figure to be extended reps for Mills and backup quarterback Jeff Driskel as Houston hosts the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Aug. 28 at NRG Stadium.
