Texans players react to Deshaun Watson’s contract extension

Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson agreed to a four-year contract extension that keeps him with the organization through the 2025 season. The two-time Pro Bowler is also slated to make $40 million annually.

While the contract is second to Patrick Mahomes in terms of annual money, the term length is not career-length to the point the Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback’s contract was. The extra four years is just what Watson was looking for in terms of length.

Texans players teased Watson after Mahomes signed his contract, and even former teammate, DeAndre Hopkins, was cheeky after the Super Bowl winner’s extension. Watson’s teammates didn’t hold back on Saturday.

Running back David Johnson joked that he needed to borrow some money from Watson, while also congratulating him.

Second-year cornerback Lonnie Johnson posted a GIF of a man unloading stacks of cash.

Safety Justin Reid was pleased with the extension Watson earned.

Locking up Watson keeps another distraction away from the Texans, who seek to defend their AFC South title while trying to play pro football in the middle of a pandemic. The Texans have their franchise quarterback under contract through 2025. The task now becomes keeping productive pieces around him while staying under the salary cap.
