Texans place tight ends Jordan Thomas, rookie Kahale Warring on injured reserve

The Houston Texans placed tight ends Jordan Thomas and Kahale Warring on injured reserve Monday, freeing up two more spots on the 53-man roster.

Thomas, who is entering his second season, sustained a rib injury during preseason that landed him on IR. Warring, a third-round pick from San Diego State, has been stuck in concussion protocol.

Houston had high hopes for both young tight ends in 2019. Thomas caught 20 passes for 215 yards and four touchdowns coming out of Mississippi State as a sixth-round pick. Warring’s skill set was more for pass-catching as a 6-6, 250-pound target, but the club hoped they could develop his blocking skills in the process.

The Texans can bring back either one after eight weeks. However, the lack of reps are deleterious to both young tight ends as Warring could use help adapting to the speed of the NFL and Thomas a jump from year one to year two.

The club will have Darren Fells, Jordan Akins, Jerell Adams, and Logan Paulsen as tight ends on the 53-man roster.
