The Houston Texans have placed the franchise tag on edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney, the club announced in a statement Monday.
“Today, we have placed the franchise tag on Jadeveon Clowney, but our goal is to continue to work with his representation on a long-term contract,” said Texans general manager Brian Gaine in the statement. “This gives us both an opportunity to continue to do so.”
The club had until March 5 at 3 p.m. CT to designate Clowney as a franchise player.
With the application of the tag on the three-time Pro Bowler, the new date for an extension is July 15 at 3 p.m. CT. If the two sides cannot meet an agreement by that point, then the club will have to wait until the offseason to work out a long-term deal.
