Texans OT David Steinmetz out for 2019 season with a broken ankle

Houston Texans offensive tackle David Steinmetz is out for the season with a broken right ankle and will undergo surgery.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the former Miami Dolphin will have surgery on Wednesday night to repair his broken ankle.

Houston signed Steinmetz to the practice squad in November of 2018 — after going undrafted out of Rhode Island, then signing with the Miami Dolphins. The Texans listed the 6-8 lineman as their second-string right tackle in their unofficial depth chart.

Steinmetz was carted off the field during Wednesday’s training camp session with an air cast on his right leg. As the medical staff got Steinmetz on the cart, Texans players gathered around the 24-year-old.

“The team gathered around Steinmetz,” coach Bill O’Brien said after practice. “That was pretty neat that there was some care for him being on the ground like that.”

Though not a lock to make the roster, an injury — in training camp, nonetheless — is something Houston never wants to see.

“It’s a tough deal,” O’Brien said. “Guy gets hurt, a guy who’s really a hard worker and the team really cares about it.”
