Texans offensive coordinator Tim Kelly’s main goal: ‘Don’t mess it up’

The Houston Texans decided to make coach Bill O’Brien a “walk around” coach and give his offensive coordinator duties to a new member of the coaching staff.

The Texans promoted tight ends coach Tim Kelly, who had been with the organization since 2014 starting out as a quality control coach.

After spending five seasons growing within the organization, the club promoted him to offensive coordinator in January.

“It was great,” Kelly said. “Worked really hard, put in a lot of hours. Now is the hard part. Now is ‘don’t mess it up,’ I guess is the responsibility right now. But, no, it was a great honor.”

The great honor comes with great pieces, such as franchise quarterback Deshaun Watson and All-Pro receiver DeAndre Hopkins. It also comes with great challenges, such as fixing the Texans’ offensive line and keeping Watson upright more often.

Houston gave up 62 sacks, the most in the NFL in 2018, and was tied with the New York Giants for the fifth-lowest red zone conversions in the NFL at 50 percent. Surely Kelly couldn’t get any worse than those figures, and any improvement upon them could only help the Texans in a competitive AFC South race.
