Texans OC Tim Kelly stresses sacks aren’t only on offensive line

Sacks are thought to be an offensive line statistic. Therefore, the Houston Texans offensive line has allowed 18 of them. However, that’s not the truth.

Sacks can come from a quarterback, wide receivers, running backs, tight ends, play-calling and, of course, the offensive line. Tim Kelly, Houston’s offensive coordinator, stresses the truth behind that.

“Sometimes there are issues with the wide receivers that run routes, sometimes there are issues with the running backs picking up their protection responsibilities and sometimes there are issues with the offensive line,” said Kelly on Thursday.

The Texans allowed zero sacks against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 5. The week before, they allowed six to the Carolina Panthers. When one of those high-sacks allowed games happen, Kelly doesn’t just address the line.

“When we come in there on Monday and address those things, we’re addressing the whole unit and pointing out the areas that everybody needs to get better at to prevent a game like that from happening again,” said Kelly.

The Texans face the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, who are in the bottom half of the NFL’s sacks accumulated list (11). If all goes right, Kelly won’t have to address everybody on Monday.
