Texans OC Tim Kelly says Davis Mills does well throwing on the run

The Houston Texans consider themselves fortunate at quarterback.

Tyrod Taylor has a track record of mobility at the quarterback position. However, offensive coordinator Tim Kelly believes that rookie Davis Mills is starting to show his mobility as well.

“When you look at some of the things that Davis does well, I think one of the better things he does do is throw on the run,” Kelly said. “I think we’re fortunate to have two quarterbacks that are athletic enough to be able to move the pocket and do some things outside the pocket.”

Mills came into Week 13’s 31-0 shutout loss to the Indianapolis Colts to spell Taylor, who had sustained a hyperextended left wrist with ligament damage, affecting his ability to grip the ball. The third-rounder from Stanford went 6-of-14 for 49 yards with two sacks.

Kelly admits that Mills has not “had the explosive flash plays” compared to Taylor, he is a “capable athlete.”

Said Kelly: “It definitely changes some things, but in terms of redesigning everything, I wouldn’t say that’s the case. But there are definitely things that we’re going to play to Tyrod’s strength or Davis’ strength.”

The Texans take on the Seattle Seahawks Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at NRG Stadium, and Mills is expected to be the starter, although Kelly would not make any determination on Thursday during his media availability.

“I think we will see how today goes and make a decision on that tomorrow,” said Kelly.
