Texans met with West Virginia QB Will Grier

The Houston Texans met with West Virginia Mountaineers quarterback Will Grier at the NFL combine in Indianapolis Friday, according to a report from the Houston Chronicle’s John McClain.

The meeting is interesting because general manager Brian Gaine told reporters Thursday what the club was looking for when it came to a backup quarterback.

“You want your cake and eat it too,” said Gaine. “Ideally, you want a fully-dimensional skill set. I think I would answer that this way. We want a guy who’s going to be in the backup quarterback position who, number one, can be a resource for the starter, but can go in and win games for you, so that when and if that does happen, he can go in there and keep the truck running.”

Grier compiled an 8-3 record in his senior season at West Virginia, completing 266-of-397 for 3,864 yards, 37 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. Grier also managed to rush for three touchdowns.

The Davidson, North Carolina, native would be an upgrade as far as youth is concerned. 2018 backup signal caller, Brandon Weeden, will be 35 years old when the regular starts and turn 36 in October.
