Texans long snapper Jon Weeks nominated for Salute to Service Award

Houston Texans long snapper Jon Weeks isn’t just a 10-year NFL veteran, 2015 Pro Bowler and juggernaut — for playing through an ankle injury in Week 7 — he’s also a nominee for the Salute to Service Award presented by USAA.

The award, presented by USAA and the NFL, honors a league member who demonstrates an exemplary commitment to honoring and supporting the military community. Finalists for the award will be recognized in January with the recipient being announced at the NFL Honors show in Miami, Fla. on Feb 1.

The Texans nominated Weeks for being able to relate to military members and their sacrifices.”I know just a little bit of it, and you can never say ‘thank you’ enough,” said Weeks.

As a proud “military brat,” Weeks comes from a family with a long history of military service. His grandfather served in the Army in World War II and the Korean War. His father served with the Air Force for 15 years. Weeks was born in Bethpage, N.Y., but had to relocate when his father returned to civilian life to Phoenix, Ariz.

In his 10 years in Houston, Weeks and his wife, Amanda, have been a staple at almost every military event the Texans have hosted, including the annual Houston Texans Military Barbeque, where the two participated in greeting and serving food to attendees.

Last Thanksgiving, Jon and Amanda volunteered to serve Thanksgiving lunch to over 200 veterans at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston. “From the bottom of our heart, thank you for everything you’ve done for us,” said Weeks at the event.

As the season moves on, keep tabs on Weeks for his involvement in Houston’s military community. You can follow him on Twitter @jonweeks46, Instagram @jonweeks46 or like him on Facebook.
