Texans jump to No. 16 in USA TODAY NFL power rankings despite Week 1 loss

The Houston Texans are No. 16 in the USA TODAY NFL power rankings even though they suffered defeat 30-28 at the foot of New Orleans Saints kicker Wil Lutz on a 58-yard field goal as time expired Monday night at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

The Texans are up from their No. 24 rank they carried into Week 1.

16. Texans (24): Superb performance by QB Deshaun Watson in defeat. Let’s hope there are more given he’s already on pace to suffer 96 sacks, which would be a record.

The only team higher than the Texans are the Tennessee Titans, who were No. 22 heading into Week 1, but took the No. 8 spot with a 43-13 beat down of the Cleveland Browns.

Other AFC South teams placed lower than Houston. The Indianapolis Colts actually went up one spot depsite their 30-24 overtime loss at the Los Angeles Chargers. The only team in the division that dropped was Jacksonville as the Jaguars plummeted from No. 13 to No. 23 following their 40-28 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs at home.
