Texans’ J.J. Watt stresses the importance of stopping the run

The NFL is a passing league. There are little doubts about that. However, the Texans know that they can’t be one-dimensional in their defensive strategy. Stopping the now-extinct run will help Houston stop the pass; that’s the theory, according to J.J. Watt.

“You have to be able to stop the run and obviously coming with stopping the run, puts them into more passing situations,” said Watt on Wednesday. “It puts them into situations where we can get after the passer, which we obviously enjoy doing with the guys that we have up front.”

The Texans sit at 17th in the NFL in average rushing yards allowed per game (104.5). Their two touchdowns allowed are bested by five teams. As Watt says, “it’s much easier said than done.”

“You have to be able to stop the run in this league and make teams try and throw the ball and beat you, and for us upfront it’s a major key,” Watt continued.

On Sunday, Watt and the Texans face an Atlanta Falcons offense that’s rushing for a measly 70.3 yards per game, good for 27th in the NFL. However, that hasn’t stopped them from passing for the league’s second-highest mark in passing yards, with 312.5.
